PARTICIPLES

ส่วนใหญ่ที่ออกสอบ TOEIC จะเป็น Participles ที่ย่อมาจาก Adjective Clause ซึ่งมักจะวางไว้หลังคำนามที่มันขยายเลย (แต่จริงๆ สามารถวางไว้หน้าคำนาม หรือตามหลัง V. to be/ Linking Verbs ได้ด้วย **เนื้อหาทั้งหมดมีอยู่ในคอร์ส KruDew TOEIC แล้วค่า)
 

Participles ที่ออกสอบบ่อยมี 2 แบบคือ

1. Present Participle - ขึ้นต้นด้วย V.ing

2. Past Participle - ขึ้นต้นด้วย V.3
 

Present Participle (V.ing)

- ใช้เมื่อ N. ที่ไปขยาย ทำกริยาเอง เช่น
 

“The president is talking to the reporter wearing a dark blue suit.”

ส่วนที่ขีดเส้นใต้คือ Present Participle ไปขยาย  the reporter (นักข่าว) ซึ่งใช้ Present Participle ได้ เพราะนักข่าวสามารถใส่สูทเองได้ ส่วนขยายนี้สามารถแปลงกลับเป็น Adjective Clause แบบเต็มๆ ได้คือ
 

“The president is talking to the reporter who wore a dark blue suit.”

*สังเกตว่าถึงใน Clause จะใช้ wore ที่เป็น V.2 แต่พอเปลี่ยนเป็น Present Participle ถ้าเป็น V. ในรูป active (N. ทำกริยาเอง) ก็จะเปลี่ยนเป็น V.ing ทั้งหมด

Past Participle (V.3)

- ใช้เมื่อ N. ที่ไปขยาย ถูกกระทำ (Passive Voice)

“All employees evaluated yesterday need to sign some documents.”

ส่วนที่ขีดเส้นใต้คือ Past Participle ไปขยาย All employees (พนักงานทุกคน) ที่ใช้ Past Participle เพราะเป็นพนักงานทุกคนที่ถูกประเมินเมื่อวาน (พนักงานถูกประเมินงาน ไม่ได้ประเมินตัวเอง)

ถ้าแปลงกลับเป็น Adjective Clause ก็จะได้ว่า

“All employees who were evaluated yesterday need to sign some documents.”

เพราะโครงสร้าง Passive Voice ที่ N. ถูกกระทำนั้นจะต้องเป็น BE + V.3 เสมอ ดังนั้นพอเปลี่ยนให้เป็น Past Participle จึงตัด who (Relative Pronoun) และ were (V. ช่วยตัวแรก) เหลือแค่ V.3 ไว้
 

**ถ้าส่วนขยายเป็น V. to be/Linking Verbs + Adj. เวลาเปลี่ยนรูป ต้องเปลี่ยนที่ Verb ส่วน Adj. ไม่ต้องเปลี่ยน คงไว้เหมือนเดิม เช่น

The manual which is so complicated puzzles everyone.

The manual being so complicated puzzles everyone.

Amy who looked so confident and lively said she was actually feeling nervous.

Amy looking so confident and lively said she was actually feeling nervous.
